CHNC Statement: Response to News of 215 Indigenous Children
Published on Wednesday, 2 June, 2021

Following the devastating and horrific news of the remains of 215 Indigenous children being discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School grounds, the Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC), a voluntary organization that promotes health and advances nursing practice, extends our deepest condolences to the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc people and community on this tragic loss, which is challenging to process.

As leaders in community health, we are committed to the recommendations in the Truth and reconciliation Commission (TRC) and to advance the calls to action (Truth & Reconciliation). CHNC’s strategic priorities include advocating for social and political issues related to health, and advancing principles and practice toward health equity. Each one of us, as community health nurses, must commit to active reconciliation.

CHNC members honour the lives of the 215 Indigenous children and their families. We have the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc people and community, and First Nations communities across the land in our hearts. For anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their Residential school experience, please contact the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.

Happy Nursing Week from CHNC!
Published on Monday, 10 May, 2021

Dear CHNC members,

It is with great pride and immense pleasure that we say Happy Nursing Week to community health nurses across our country. The pandemic has proven that community health nurses step up to the call each and every single time. The pandemic has meant intense utilization of community health nursing resources for the COVID-19 response and for ongoing service provision in all domains of community health nursing.

This year’s Canadian Nurses Association National Nursing Week theme is #WeAnswerTheCall. As outgoing President and incoming President, we would like you to know that you are most valued and appreciated. Community Health Nurses definitely answered the call.

We hope that you will have some moments to take care of yourselves this week. Happy Nursing Week. Please join us on social media platforms to see our graphics celebrating community health nursing during Nursing Week.

CHNC2021 postponed to 2022
Published on Friday, 19 March, 2021

Dear Colleague,

CHNC has made the difficult but unavoidable decision to postpone our CHNC conference once again.

While we had hoped to gather in Richmond, British Columbia for our rescheduled dates in May 2021, the continuing complexities and uncertainties surrounding covid-19 have made it increasingly difficult to do so.

Most importantly, we recognize that many, if not most, of those involved in planning, presenting and/or attending the conference will need to continue their crucial roles on the frontlines of Canada’s response to the pandemic over the coming months.

We plan to return to Richmond for CHNC2022.

We are very disappointed we will not be able to meet this year, but we very much hope to see you in 2022. Until then, please take care and stay safe during these challenging times.

Yours sincerely,

Cheryl Cusack, RN, PhD
President, on behalf of the Board of Directors,
Community Health Nurses of Canada
