The Guide reflects the depth and diversity of CHN practice including front-line practice, education, administration, research and policy in home health, public health, primary care and school health. The Guide reinforces the top 10 reasons to become certified and describes how certification impacts practice. It includes suggested formats for organizing and facilitating effective and successful study groups, recommended reading lists and updated links to both text based and multimedia resources. Leadership Competencies for Public Health Practice in Canada: Leadership Competency Statements Version 1.0 June 2015
Leadership Competencies for Public Health Practice in Canada: Leadership Competency Statements Version 1.0 June 2015

These interdisciplinary leadership competencies compliment the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada (PHAC, 2008) and the discipline-specific competencies. They must be exercised by and developed in and among public health practitioners at all levels of an organization and across all disciplines. The competency statements are intended to describe the Foundational Leadership Competencies required to support public health practice in Canada. The Community Health Nurses of Canada developed the Leadership Competency Statements in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors and the Manitoba Public Health Managers Network with funding from Public Health Agency of Canada. We want groups involved to understand the competencies, to apply them by implementing the leadership competencies into practice and to create opportunities for leadership development.

Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model & Standards of Practice
Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model & Standards of Practice

Building on the original 2003 Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, this new publication will inspire excellence and commitment to community nursing practice and will support learning and professional development. Written by Canadian community health nurses and experts from all practice areas, this new document defines the practice of a registered nurse in the specialty area of community health nursing and provides a guide for CHNs and their employers to evaluate their practice.

The publication features:
a) A 13 component professional practice model that describes the structure, process and values that support the community health nurse's control over the delivery of nursing care and the environment in which care is delivered.
b) 7 standards of practice that represent a vision for excellence in community health nursing. The Standards of Practice also provide a foundation for national certification and research in community health nursing.

Public Health Nursing Discipline Specific Competencies Version 1.0 May, 2009
Public Health Nursing Discipline Specific Competencies Version 1.0 May, 2009

Following the release of the Core Competencies for Public Health 1.0 in 2007, the need to further define discipline specific competencies for public health nurses became a priority for the Community Health Nurses of Canada. Using these core competencies for public health, the Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice (CHNAC, 2008) and a literature review, a team of experts in public health nursing produced the Public Health Nursing Discipline Specific Competencies Version 1.0.

Public Health Nursing Competencies are the integrated knowledge, skills, judgment and attributes required of a public health nurse to practice safely and ethically. Attributes include, but are not limited to attitudes, values and beliefs. (Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics, 2008). These competencies describe the activity that a public health nurse engages in to meet a standard or a set of standards.

Home Health Nursing Competencies Version 1.0 March, 2010
Home Health Nursing Competencies Version 1.0 March, 2010

Home Health Nursing Competencies are the integrated knowledge, skills, judgement and attributes required of a nurse working in home health to practice safely and ethically. Attributes include, but are not limited to attitudes, values and beliefs (adapted from Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics, 2008)

The Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice (2008)3 have been used as the organizing framework for the home health nursing competencies contained in this document. The competencies, which were developed by experts in home care nursing, are broad in scope, thereby lending themselves to application within multiple settings and to be further delineated into more specific elements of practice for job descriptions or performance appraisal tools.
